Clean Skincare Routine

These days, everything scares me. Not to be alarmist or depressing but aside from the horrendous things going on in the world and our country, it seems like we're constantly uncovering new toxicities in the things we intake daily and it's no longer something to be trusted to those top selling brands to make sure everything they put out is healthy and good for us. Looking back to this post, I've really been trying to search for brands that only use healthy nontoxic ingredients to create products that work just as well as any other less trustworthy but popular brand. They've got to be out there, right? Skincare is one of my first ventures in this journey. It's the closest, "most intimate" layer, and applied the most frequently, whereas makeup is something that never even touches my face some days. I've tried lots of things, but right now I've found a nice routine that is actually doing good things for my skin. So let's discuss, shall we?

Biossance Cleansing Oil // A fantastic one-step cleansing oil that works to remove makeup just as well as a basic cleanser on no-makeup days. This is also what I use to remove Kylie lip kits from Sailor's face when she gets a hold of one (if you ever watch my Instagram stories, you know about this struggle). While I'm sure the lip kit has no regard for the toxicity of its ingredients (guess I have to put them in a lockbox), I feel good knowing that the remover I use is safe.

Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator // This was given to me as a gift from Rosie at my Fashion Feng Shui workshop. She's a clean beauty blogger and wanted to introduce me to some goodies when she heard I was on the hunt earlier this year. This spray smells absolutely DIVINE and preps the skin for serum/moisturizer. I love this so much I always end up overspraying/wasting it because I don't want the mist to end. Dramatic.

Vintner's Daughter Serum // I'm SO glad this serum came into my life. Definitely the star of everything I'm sharing with you today, so if you spring for one thing make it this one. It just does wonders! The only drawback is the price tag so I was almost hoping I wouldn't love it but so worth it for something that's actually healthy and actually works. It gives me a glow, minimizes spots, smoothes lines and pores, hydrates, smells amazing, and works as the perfect prep to moisturizer. I use it day and night and am dreading the day I run out of this first bottle. Send help.

Josh Rosebrook Vital Balm Cream // This is the best clean moisturizer for dry skin I've tried so far. It smells amazing, has a thick luxurious consistency, and definitely gives the skin a really nice glow. It's not AS heavy as La Mer if you are comparing those (I am) but it's a lot less pricey ($48) and works really well. I do think it performs best as a final step after a spray and/or serum or oil to lock in the moisture. I'm not sure how I will feel in the really cold months when my skin is really tight and dry but for now I'm impressed.

Osmia Lip Doctor // Also a Rosie pick. It's just a great lipbalm and works really well with a nice texture on the lips.

Sangre de Fruta Body Cream // More of a balm or an oil than a cream, I love how it feels and smells (they have multiple scents to choose from). My favorite way to use this is to layer it over a body lotion after I get out of the shower (again, I have super dry skin). It has a lot of oils, like coconut, that work better to seal in preexisting moisture than to hydrate on their own. It gives your skin a nice hydrated glow but lasts longer when layered over a lotion. Still looking for the best clean body lotion that doesn't break the bank, since I go through a bottle of it in 2 weeks.

Bath salts from Jenni Kayne // The cutest little gift they were handing out at the store with these gorgeous dried flowers. Mostly I keep them out for decoration, but sometimes I put them in Sailor's bath. ;)

OK I would LOVE to know if you guys have any favorite clean beauty products in any category! I'm determined to find all the best ones!

5 Minute Face

One of the things I definitely noticed change a lot after having Sailor was how much time I have in the morning to get myself ready for the day. I used to be able to leisurely do my shower, makeup, and hair, sipping coffee and hanging out in my robe. That doesn't mean I always chose to do a full-on glam look, but if I did, I could take the time I needed without much distraction. These days, I'm lucky if I get any time at all to apply makeup, but I really do prefer not to see lots of people out and about with zero makeup on. So I try to grab 5 minute on crazy mornings if I can. I always love seeing other bloggers' posts about how they do their makeup if they only have five minutes, so I thought I would share my version with you today! I'd love to know if you have any favorite holy grail products for quick makeup days. What's the one thing you can't live without? I think mine is concealer. Read on for more details on how I do my five minute face...

FACE / CHEEKS

1. I apply the Glossier Stretch Concealer under my eyes and any areas that tend to get red or blotchy. Right now I'm using the medium shade but will probably go to the light after summer is over. This is where I save the most time, because I would normally be layering on a full face of foundation, powdering, contouring, bronzing, etc. The general skin/face is also the category where I definitely notice the most jankiness later in the day (hence why I think foundation does wonders), but hey - if I only have 5 minutes, this is good. I'll even grab a foundation brush and spread this all over my face like a foundation sometimes. I do use my fingers to apply it under the eyes or any specific spots though.

2. Glossier Cloud Paint in Dusk on the cheeks. I've talked about why I love this product in this post. In Dusk, it's sort of the perfect rosy bronze blush color, so it's basically a contour/bronze/blush in one.

EYES / BROWS

3. Laura Mercier Caviar Eye Contour Stick in Au Naturel - I apply this on lid up into the crease and blend with my finger. This is so quick and easy and for one step, it actually looks like you did multiple shades. Magical. I'm obsessed with this product and need to get more colors stat.

4. Mascara - If I'm bothering to put any makeup on my face at all, I usually include mascara. The one I used here was YSL The Shock but I actually hated it. Mine had the consistency of tacky glue. Maybe I got a bad one... I returned it. I'm back on the L'Oreal mascara train now. Currently using this one and so far I like it.

5.Glossier Boy Brow - It goes on so quick and easy, enhancing and deepening your natural brows. It's the best scenario for a "minimal makeup" look because drawn-in brows might look too fake if the rest of the face isn't glammed up as well. Sometimes if I have 20 more seconds I'll fill in any holes with this pencil.

LIPS

6. Lastly, I throw something on my lips just to give a hint of extra pigment. Even just the Glossier clear gloss is enough to finish off the look, because even though it has no color, it adds life to my lips and brightens them up. Otherwise I still love the Buxom lip creams. I'm not big into a lot of lip color when I'm doing minimal makeup because it just feels like too much, so I keep it chill on the lips.

Metallic Lips

One of the things I love in the fall is getting to go back to cranking up my beauty routine a bit. Don't get me wrong, I love the minimal approach to summer makeup but there's something fun about being intentional with the perfect statement lip or a new eyeliner shade, and my favorite of them all: full coverage foundation. The best part is that makeup is a great way to bring in some fall vibes regardless of the weather. A trend I'm excited to rock this fall is metallic lips. Brands like Smashbox have been coming out with new metals in all kinds of shades, and I tried a few on here. What do you think? I'm partial to this first one - the lightest rose gold shade called Petal Metal because it's the most wearable yet the metallic sheen lights up your face. But it's kind of fun to do in bright red as well - definitely one I'll wear around the holidays!
