Metallic Lips

521A0890 copy

One of the things I love in the fall is getting to go back to cranking up my beauty routine a bit. Don't get me wrong, I love the minimal approach to summer makeup but there's something fun about being intentional with the perfect statement lip or a new eyeliner shade, and my favorite of them all: full coverage foundation. The best part is that makeup is a great way to bring in some fall vibes regardless of the weather. A trend I'm excited to rock this fall is metallic lips. Brands like Smashbox have been coming out with new metals in all kinds of shades, and I tried a few on here. What do you think? I'm partial to this first one - the lightest rose gold shade called Petal Metal because it's the most wearable yet the metallic sheen lights up your face. But it's kind of fun to do in bright red as well - definitely one I'll wear around the holidays!

Summer Sweatshirt

521A1486

We're here: the point in the summer where it feels like fall is right around the corner but the true essence of the season is still actually months away. I'd love to be stocking up on stadium flannels but instead it's a record 110 degrees and the only reason I would need a sweatshirt is if it's too cold in the air conditioning. So for right now, I'm going to keep trying to embrace the heat. I bought this sweatshirt for our trip to Northern California at the beginning of summer. I love the nubby texture, cropped length, and billowy sleeves. I love to keep it close by for any chilly evenings.

Healthy Peanut Butter Muffins

521A0601

There have been a few favorite recipes I've picked up from the Tone It Up program - things I make on an almost weekly basis, such as Bikini Punch. Today I thought I'd share the most insanely delicious recipe for a healthy mid morning or afternoon snack, and you would never even guess the base of these muffins: chickpeas! How they can tasty so moist and cakey, I have no idea. All we need to concern ourselves with is the fact that they're tasty, healthy, and easy as can be. I adapted this version from their blondie muffins and swapped in peanut butter (as I do with everything). Sailor loves them too! Let me know if you try these out and what you think...

521A0232

521A0245

Here's how to make them. You'll need:

2 x 15oz. can chickpeas, drained and rinsed

cup peanut butter

1/2 cup maple syrup

tsp vanilla

tsp salt

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, and spray a mini muffin pan with coconut oil spray. Combine all ingredients in a food processor. Spoon the mixture into the muffin pan and bake for 18-20 min or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Tip: There's no raw egg in this mixture so you can even use the "dough" for a spread! Goes so well with bananas and apples!

Bachelor in Paradise / Round 2

521A1209

Last week's girls night for Bachelor in Paradise was just what the doctor ordered, so Ali and I had to get together again for another night of cocktails, TV amazingness, and more girl time! I mean, I'm not kidding when I say Monday might be my favorite night of the week because of the Bachelor shows and the excuses they give me to have girls nights and make cocktails. We sipped on champagne palomas which turned out to be the most perfect easy choice for a weeknight shindig! See below for the recipe and outfit details. What's your favorite show to watch with your girlfriends? Ali is such a fun Bachelor night buddy, for obvious reasons! I might have to trick her into continuing to come back every Monday so I can grill her with more questions. Just kidding (kind of). She's such a great girl who I love hanging out and talking about mom stuff with! You guys need to check out her blog if you haven't already!

521A1226 CHAMPAGNE PALOMA There's nothing more Bachelor appropriate than champagne, and nothing more fitting for "Paradise" than tequila so this cocktail is about as perfect as it gets! Not to mention it's the easiest thing in the world to make. You basically can't mess it up. Palomas are typically made with grapefruit soda, but I loved the idea of swapping in champagne along with some fresh grapefruit juice. You don't have to be that picky with proportions because champagne always just makes everything  work together so effortlessly...

1.5 oz tequila 1.5 oz fresh grapefruit juice 1/2 oz fresh lime juice 1/2 oz simple syrup Champagne Ice Grapefruit wedges for garnish

Combine tequila, lime juice, grapefruit juice, simple syrup, and ice in a shaker. Shake and pour into glass. Top with champagne and garnish with a grapefruit slice.

Real Talk With Real Moms / Chores

521A0735 copy

It's so crazy to me that I'm writing a post about Sailor doing "chores" right now when it just feels like a matter of months ago that this child was a blob of an infant who did nothing but nurse, sleep, and poop. How can she already be put to work as an actual helpful member of the family? Well we're definitely on the young end of kids' ages that would make sense to be covering this topic alongside the rest of the Real Talk With Real Moms bloggers but much to my surprise (and delight), Sailor has been starting to do things that could sort of be described as chores, so here we are. But we're definitely very new to this one, so I'm surely going to be looking for insight from my fellow moms who are also posting on this subject today! Be sure to check out their thoughts too:

Growing up, my chores were very much a part of my daily routine. I was expected to make my bed, keep my room clean, and help out around the house. On weekends my sister and I had more involved chores like folding laundry, helping with cleaning, and whatever else my parents needed done. Not that we were put to work all weekend, but we'd definitely have a list of a few chores that we did NOT want to do, and then we were able to enjoy ourselves for the rest of the time. Now I see how valuable those rules were to making me a contributing member of the family, and someone who understands as an adult what it takes to run a household.

521A0770 copy

521A0754 copy

Sailor is at an age where she loves to mimic what she sees us doing, even if she doesn't quite understand the purpose of everything. Her new thing just this week is pushing the kitchen chairs up to the sink, and getting up there to do "dishes" which entails trying to drink the soapy water out of whatever cups are in there and splashing everywhere. She'll do it for an hour and LOVES it. We've discovered that if she feels like she's helping out, she's much happier than if she's just being told to play or read her books. So I've started actually asking her to help me out. Picking up the makeup brushes and putting them away. Gathering all her books on the floor and putting them in the basket, etc. Having little receptacles around for her toys and books has been perfect because she will start to clean up on her own as an activity. She's perfectly happy to spend her time taking toys out of a bin only to put them back in. Obviously this is awesome. I try to let her know how much I "appreciate her help" and she's pleased to get the affirmations. She may be too young to understand what it really means to help out but I feel like we are teaching her how to make herself useful and for right now that feels like a win.

If any of you mamas have older kids I would love to hear how you start to incorporate chores as they become old enough to actually get stuff done, and what it means to do chores in your family!

Nail Call

521A1394-2 copy

The 70's and 80's are always a strong influence in fashion these days, but lately I've been noticing inspiration from those decades pop up in more places like in home and beauty trends too. As my style has been retreating to more organic color tones, sometimes my favorite nail looks to commit to for two weeks (as you do with gels) are the softer, camouflage hues. I never like to feel like I'm picking something "boring" for my nails and always need to have some overall inspiration or story I can tell myself about the color I choose (obsessed much?). So I find myself searching for a nuanced shade of nude. This pink had a 70's vibe to me, and just feels like it belongs with a mustard floral maxi dress, no makeup, and long air dried hair. It goes with everything, yet doesn't feel like the light nude pink we've seen a million times before.

Bachelor in Paradise Girls Night

521A0928

It's officially been 15 years since the first Bachelor aired, and I've been enjoying it as a guilty pleasure ever since. One of my favorite ways to kick off a week is by gathering with girlfriends on a Monday night to see all the shenanigans, "final rose of the nights", backstabbing, run-and-jump hug greetings, white wine consumption, helicopter rides, and steamy hot tub makeout sessions that make it one of the best shows on television. So today, my friend Ali Fedotowsky (former Bachelorette, now married mama of her sweet 1-year-old Molly) and I are joining forces to share this fun girls' night for the new season of Bachelor in Paradise! We snacked on easy Mexican no-fuss apps (because... Monday) and sipped on some rose daiquiris (what else??)!

521A0713

521A1086

Ali is one of the kindest, coolest, most genuine girls I've met in the blog world (and surely Bachelor Nation too), she has an awesome blog Ali Luvs, so be sure to check that out if you haven't already. She posts her cute outfits, fun recipes, baby stuff, and of course, her thoughts on the Bachelor episodes which I always love to read. Today she'll be talking all about last night's premiere!

Check out the recipe for rose daiquiris and our outfit details below! We had so much fun putting this together, we just might have to get together again for next week's episode... maybe every week?

ROSE DAIQUIRI

I always have the most fun watching Bachelor in Paradise because it's the more laid back franchise of the show but still turns out some real relationships. The right cocktail needs the same kind of playful yet "romantic" vibe, with a tropical twist. So what better than a rose infused daiquiri? The rum is so easy to work with and mixes so well with the rose flavor! You use an actual rose to make the syrup, and can work the rest of the bunch into your decor! ;) This would easily translate to a margarita as well, or you could switch gears and make this or this.

2.5 oz light rum 3/4 oz fresh lime juice Himilayan pink salt Honey Ice Rose petals for garnish 1/2 oz rose syrup

Rose syrup: 1 cup sugar 1 cup water Petals of one rose

To make the syrup: combine one cup of sugar, one cup of water, and the rose petals into a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and let steep covered for one hour. Let cool, and strain into a jar to store in the fridge (up to one week).

To make the daiquiri: Rim the glass with honey, then dip into the salt (putting each on a plate is the easiest way to do this). In a shaker, combine ice, lime juice, rose syrup, and rum. Shake and pour into the glass. Garnish with a rose petal.

521A0946

I'm not gonna lie, we talked about our outfits prior, both wanting to play to the tropical vacation vibe of paradise while also considering the fact that we're heading to the end of summer and weren't feeling bright punchy colors that might usually make sense in that environment. So some light and breezy styles/fabrics of summer with slightly more muted color accents just makes sense for a BIP girls night at the tail end of summer! These outfits are also perfect for general early fall wardrobe when it's way hotter than you might expect.

Mini Me and Me

521A2114 copy

Me and my baby girl. I never thought I'd be this person, wearing matching outfits with my toddler in a field. And now I honestly can't imagine anything better. Her 2nd birthday is right around the corner and I can't believe we've gotten to this places. Sometimes I look at myself and think, "remember when you were scrambling to understand yourself as a mother?" There are days when that still feels like the position I'm in, trying to navigate my conflicting feelings of being so in love yet still frustrated and confused by all that comes with it. But with each passing day, it makes more and more sense, and it becomes more clear that there is no better thing in this world than being her mom.

Best Makeup for Summer

521A0002 copy

Summer is the worst time for makeup. Not only are we lazy and keeping things low maintenance, we're also trying not to sweat it all off at all times. But I'm a girl who feels naked without SOMETHING on my face, and I went into this summer on a mission to find the products that combat the 100 degree temps. I've been testing products since May, and since I know we still have another solid 3 months of summer where I live (high five if you live somewhere where you'll get to wear your flannels in September - jealous), I'm sharing my findings with you today!

521A0043 copy

FACE & BODY

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer - This is a longtime top fave of what seems like everyone. I like it for a VERY low maintenance day, because it is quite sheer.  But the color range is great, and it's a nice go-to on weekends.

Hourglass Vanish Foundation Stick - This might be my top must have in the lot. There's something about a stick foundation that just makes sense for summer. They make it easy to just dab on areas that need it most, or layer more on if you're doing a full face of makeup.

Becca Aqua Luminous Foundation - Water based foundations are better in the heat than oil based. I got this one in two shades so I could custom mix according to how tan I am. I do this with all my summer foundations (including the Hourglass stick).

Glossier Stretch Concealer - I love this for just dabbing under the eyes and any spots on days I don't wear foundation. It blends really well and doesn't get dry or cakey under the eyes.

St. Tropez Tanning Luxe Oil - A great self tanning oil for your face.

La Mer Glowing Body Oil - So nice for getting a nice sheen on your legs and arms for a summer night out in a short dress! Or even just a regular day wearing shorts.

521A0027 copy

CHEEKS

Glossier Cloud Paint (in Dusk and Beam) - Obsessed with these! So much better than any cheek stain I've ever tried. The best part is that you can be heavy handed and not end up ruining your whole face (I've done it many times with other cheek stains), and it stays better than powder blush in hot temps.

RMS Living Luminizer - Non-toxic and perfectly glowy without being sparkly or glittery.

Benefit Hoola Contour Stick - Bronzer in stick form just makes sense to me in the summer. It's great for contouring as well, and nice and soft making it easy to blend.

La Mer Bronzing Powder - Sometimes I'll put a little of this on at the very end of my makeup routine just to add a bit more bronzer.

EYES

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner - A longtime fave for a reason! But don't get the brown shade that's shown in these pics. I thought the brown would be a nice alternative to black in the summer so I picked this one up but since we shot this, I've realized that the brown doesn't stay as well as the black. I'm going to try the Make Up For Ever Aqua liner in brown instead. Get the black if you're going to get this one though!

Glossier Boy Brow - Such a great way to do your brows when you don't want do deal with the whole pot + brush situation. I'll do this alone on low maintenance days, and a mix of this + Anastasia pencil on higher maintenance days!

Any other products you guys are loving for summer? I'd love to add them to my list!

Schoolhouse

521A1373 copy

My brain has been trained since childhood to think of the beginning of August as almost back-to-school time, otherwise known as fall. As a kid I can remember going school clothes shopping with my mom and sister right around this time, and we'd come home and have a "fashion show" for my dad (all the way to our high school years, I might add). Most of the stuff we'd buy were jeans, boots (Dr. Martens of course) sweaters, and flannel shirts, all things we wouldn't need for at least another two months. But we were too excited to be held back. I have never stopped switching into that mindset come August, and I don't know why I can't learn that summer has another couple of STRONG months to go before I could even think of putting on a sweater. But a girl can dream. Right now, I'll just wear this summery dress in fall-ish tones, and go hang out at an old schoolhouse. Maybe even buy a Trapper Keeper, who knows?

Accessories for the 5 Elements

521A0476 copy

I have been getting some requests for more Fashion Feng Shui tips, which is music to my ears! I'm so glad that you guys have been finding it interesting as it's something I whole heartedly believe in (if you don't know what I'm talking about, check out all the previous posts on the subject here). I've had a lot of ideas floating around in my head and couldn't quite decide where to start. But obviously I love nothing more than talking about the five elements, and there's a never ending amount of info to share. So today I thought it would be fun to focus on one must have accessory for each essence. These are pieces you could add if you know which element is your essence and you'll probably reach for them a lot. On the contrary, you can also add any one of these things to your wardrobe to incorporate that element as an intention.

If you have any requests of types of Fashion Feng Shui info that you want to see on here, let me know and I will do it! I'm gearing up for my next workshop on August 12th too. Grab a friend and join me! It's such a great way to learn about yourself in a deeper way than you have before, and how to create a style that honors your authentic self. Plus you'll make a few new friends in the process! It's just all around holistic, girly fun.

WOOD // BASEBALL CAP

I love this accessory to bring wood energy to any outfit. It's not something that everyone has, but if you're a wood it's a perfect way to show off your go-getter energy. I especially love the blank Flexfit hats they sell at Lids which are fitted yet elastic so they're comfy and wont smash your hair down too much. White, black, or navy will bring a sporty yet not too casual look to any outfit. Love!

WATER // FRINGE BAG

Or fringe anything. It's such a cool way to add some flow to your outfit. Leather fringe has some fiery vibes too because of the leather, but in black or another dark tone, it has the perfect boho, moody edge that works so well for water. Plus it can be added to pretty much any outfit and instantly bring the look over to the philosopher realm.

521A0584 copy

FIRE // CAT EYE SUNGLASSES

Whenever I'm feeling sassy, or like I need some extra attention, I reach for cat eye glasses. They look good on everyone, and definitely send the message that you're not to be ignored. The words that come to mind are: starlet and playful, two things any fire will feel right at home with.

[show_shopthepost_widget id="2770035"]

//

521A0645 copy

EARTH // MARKET TOTE

What I love about earth accessories is that they always give off feelings of comfort, function, and nurture. A big tote like this is what you grab to pick up a few groceries for the fam, head to the farmers market on a Sunday, or pack up for a picnic. It welcomes it all like a warm hug, just like an earth would.

[show_shopthepost_widget id="2770036"]

521A0670 copy

METAL // WHITE LEATHER

While each of the five elements have certain colors associated with them, the metal tie to white is such a strong partnership. It's pure yet icy at the same time. You don't often see white jewelry or shoes, but that's why I think it's the perfect way to add a pop of metal to any outfit. This particular necklace is made of white leather wrapped around metal, so it's nice and heavy. I can wear it over just about any outfit and it instantly brings a strong metal statement to my look.

Pillow Refresh

521A0183 copy

Ever since we moved into our house last October, we've been dying to start designing the space to give it our own style and make it a "home." But these first several months have been all about clearing out all that junk we had been keeping in previous apartments and doing the projects that are 0% fun and 100% function/safety. First on the list was to build a stair rail because the previous owners thought it was cool to have an open staircase with no railing (not safe even for an able bodied adult, let alone legal). So that, along with painting the entire interior of the house white, baby proofing, fixing various parts of the pool, and some basic landscaping were the boring, expensive projects that needed immediate attention. Still, I'm chomping at the bit to start doing the fun makeovers like the bar, kitchen, bathrooms, and my closet (which will actually be the first thing to be finished so stay tuned). All in due time. It's definitely a slow process to settle into your first home, and our renovations/furnishings won't be happening in one fell swoop. That's why I've been looking for the little ways to freshen up the space in a temporary way (working with the stuff we already have even if we don't plan to keep it long term) without spending boat loads of money. All of our furniture and decor is pretty much left over from our last apartment, and most of it feels wrong for this house. Many of the pieces have a more urban/glam/edgy feel but the house is airy and suburban calling for a more natural, desert vibe. Not to mention the fact that home style trends have changed a lot since we bought most of our stuff. We'll get there, but for right now, I'm looking to things like inexpensive pillows (thank God for Target!) to freshen up the space. Here's the latest, and nevermind the fact that we *still* have no art on the walls...
